On this day in 1994, Susan Smith reported to the police that she was carjacked by an African-American man who ran away with his two sons that were at the backseat of her Mazda car. Immediately, authorities began searching for the two boys Michael and Alex age three and one. The incident gained media attention as thousands of sympathizers watched on TV as the mother of two pleaded with the public to help her find her missing children. However, after nine days, Smith opened-up that she fabricated the whole story, that it was untrue. She said she drove her car into the John D. Long Lake to drown her children that were in the backseat of the car.

According to report, Smith had a disturbing upbringing, without a stable home life. Her parents were violent and after their divorce, her father killed himself. Afterwards, her mother remarried, but his stepfather constantly sexually abused her.

Married to David Smith, the couple had been having extra marital affairs during their relationships. The coupled are fond of using their children as game cards in their turbulent marriage. Fortunately, things began to change for Susan when she started having an affair with a wealthy man who was not interested in having children. Therefore, the idea of killing her children who stand as the only obstacle on her way came to her mind.

The murder was perfectly planned and executed because she covered her trails very well. She thought that soon after the search started, the car would be found. Unfortunately, the car was not found on time, which left her uncomfortable and eventually, she did confessed that she was responsible for the death of her two sons. She was found guilty on two counts of murder; yet, the juries wanted her to live to remember what she had done. Therefore, she was sentenced to life imprisonment at Leath Correctional Institution in South Carolina where she is presently until she will be eligible for parole in 2024, after serving a minimum of thirty years in prison.

After Susan Smith had been convicted, David Smith her husband wrote a book titled Beyond All Reason, where he explained the death of his children in details and spoke concerning how he wished to see Susan Smith on death row because of the great loss she caused him, which he will live with for the rest of his life.

I have always had a passion for writing since a young age and can still remember the first time a teacher assigned us to create our own newspaper it was my favorite project. In high school I wrote for the school newspaper and loved learning about new topics. I knew I found my new passion and as soon as I stepped foot on UCLA my mind was made up. Since getting my degree I have done all types of writing and love the freedom it gives me to work from anywhere. I hope you all love my writing as I am excited to produce quality articles each day for you!
